From yoga to everyday life: choose leggings, a top, and layers on top

High or low rise, flared or straight legs? Choose your activewear based on fit and activity, and build an outfit around it.

From yoga to everyday life: choose leggings, a top, and layers on top

Quick answer: Choose tights based on rise, leg length, and the amount of flare you want at the hem. Choose tops based on coverage and support needs. A jacket or knit sweater makes it easy to transition your outfit for use after your workout.

Activewear also has a place in your everyday wardrobe. Laley’s tights, cropped tops, and jackets can be paired in matching colors or styled with knits and a cap. Start with how the garment needs to function for you; styling and colors come later.

Flared or straight legs?

Flared tights: more volume from the knee

Flared tights are slimmer through the hips and thighs, with more volume at the bottom. Check the product description for where the flare begins and the length of the leg. Try the length with the shoes you actually intend to wear so the fabric doesn't drag on the ground or get stuck under your heel.

Straighter tights: consider both cut and rise

A straighter model may still have a slight flare at the bottom. "Straight" and "flared" also do not guarantee anything about the waist: check whether the specific tights have a high or low rise. Two models in the same size may therefore cover your midsection differently.

Choose your top based on coverage and support

High necks, open backs, and cropped lengths describe different parts of the fit. A high neck does not automatically mean high support. Look for details regarding built-in support, under-bust bands, and adjustment options. Choose support based on your activity and your personal needs; a yoga top is not necessarily sufficient for running or jumping.

Three outfits from the same base

1. For low-impact training

Choose tights and a top that feel comfortable when you bend over, reach your arms up, and sit down. Check the leg length and ensure the waistband stays where you want it. Wear a light jacket to and from your session.

2. For everyday errands

Layer a roomier sweater or cardigan over your form-fitting base. A shorter top highlights the waist rise, while a longer one provides more coverage. A cap can echo one of the colors in the outfit.

3. For a relaxed travel day

Use an extra layer you can easily take off. Consider how the waistband and seams feel when sitting for long periods, and choose shoes that work with the leg length. See the knitwear guide for different lengths and shapes for your top layer.

Common questions about activewear

Are yoga tights and flared leggings the same thing?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but yoga tights can come in various shapes. "Flared" specifically describes the flare. Also read about the rise, material, and length of the specific model.

How do I choose the right size and leg length?

Use our size guide and the advice on the product page. When a style is available in multiple lengths, you choose the size and leg length separately. Height recommendations are a guide; your leg length and desired fit also matter.

Are all tights completely opaque?

Do not assume this based on color or category alone. Coverage can be affected by fit, stretch, and light. Check the product details, and test the garment in motion and in good light when you try it on.

Can I use regular fabric softener?

Follow the washing instructions for each model. Many of Laley’s activewear garments should be washed without fabric softener and hung to dry. Avoid treating all fabric blends the same way, and check the instructions regarding direct heat on logos.

What do I choose if a matching piece is sold out?

See our entire activewear collection and compare the fit and materials first. You can build an outfit with different colors; the same color name alone does not guarantee an identical shade across different fabrics.
